Sodom in Lot and Us

The story of the separation of Abram and Lot is well known. They both stood on the high ground and looked out across the available world. Lot, when given the choice, chose to lead his family and household down from the heights and set his tents beside Sodom, for the land there was good and rich, though the people were wicked. John Calvin, in his commentary on Gen. 13:10 says: “Lot, even as he thought he was living in heaven, he had already sunk almost into hell.” Abram, perhaps relieved by not having to face the same choice, is left in Canaan. God speaks to him and reassures him of His promises (cf. Gen.13:14-17). In contrast to Lot, who chose by sight, Abram trusted God and by faith inherited all the land forever. According to Hebrews 11, it extends to the new heavens and the new earth, and his offspring would be as the dust of the earth and the stars of the heaven, which includes all believers, both Jews and Gentiles, and their children, coming from every tribe, kindred, nation, and tongue (cf. Rev. 7:9).
