The Synod of the RCUS held its annual meeting in Rapid City, South Dakota, hosted by the saints of Grace Reformed Church in Rapid City. This year marks the 300th anniversary of the 1725 founding of the Reformed Church in the United States. In honor of the occasion, the Synod held a Tricentennial Celebration at Mt. Rushmore on Thursday, June 12th, and hosted a Family Convention which met while Synod was in progress. This report will focus on the business of Synod itself. Here are a few highlights from the 279th Synod meeting.
First, the Synod opened and closed with worship services celebrating God’s faithfulness in preserving the RCUS for 300 years. For the Monday evening service, Rev. Dr. Maynard Koerner preached on Psalm 98 with special emphasis on “What God has Done.” At this service, the assembly sang hymns written by Rev. Koerner’s son, Seth, including the debut of a new hymn titled “I Will Be Your God,” a meditation on 1 Peter 2:9. At the Wednesday evening service, Rev. Ruben Zartman preached on Romans 3:4, focusing on “The Truth of God” as the foundation upon which the RCUS must stand firm in the years to come. On Wednesday, the RCUS Choir, led superbly by Anne Savage, also sang a hymn written by her husband, John, titled “300 Years,” which was a meditation on Joel 2 celebrating God’s faithfulness to
His church.
Second, in recognition of the LORD’s faithfulness to His church, the Synod renewed its commitment to faithfulness to the Word of God in both doctrine and in life. The body reaffirmed the historic position of the RCUS on the days of Creation, saying, “Scripture teaches ‘That God created the heavens and the earth in six normal days which were chronological periods of light and darkness as recorded in the book of Genesis’” (Abstract 1985:105). In an effort to maintain the purity of the church in life, the Synod adopted a Sexual Misconduct Prevention Model Policy for RCUS congregations, a Prevention Response Plan, and a Background Check Procedure.
