In reading the Permanent and Parochial Reports of the Northern Plains Classis, this year might be summed up as taking care of business but holding steady. The pastors are tending to their duties in their churches, and the committees are seeking to make progress within the goals and vision we have as a Classis, but with little movement this past year. But the prayers of the saints continue to petition our Lord to provide us with the resources and the opportunity to fulfill our calling of being faithful in the Lord’s building of his church.
Our Lord encourages us in this idea of persistence through his parable of the Persistent Friend in Luke 11:5-13, who woke his neighbor up at midnight to obtain three loaves of bread because he had nothing to set before a friend who was on a journey. Of course, the neighbor was fast asleep and responded, as most of us would, go away and come back in the morning. But the friend would not go away and kept banging on the door until his neighbor came down and gave him what he wanted because he was persistent. In verses 9-10, Jesus then directs what our approach to prayer ought to be: “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
