In 2023 I discussed with the French-Canadian publishers of my small devotional book “In spirit and in truth” (La Rochelle editions in collaboration with Publications Chrétiennes) a project I had to write a book for the sake of people reading the Bible for the first time, people merely curious to discover its contents (agnostics or not). Entitled “Do you understand what you reading? – Journey to the Center of the Bible” (a reference to Jules Verne’s classic novel), it is meant to be a kind of guide through the themes developed in the Bible as Scripture, and presented according to its internal message, with the necessary explanations concerning the context of each text presented. From the relatively short format first considered (between 125-150 pages) it gradually grew into a much larger text – actually double this size – covering more ground and developing deeper evangelistic and apologetic features. Though basically completed, it will only be published once a number of steps have been taken. Competent advice is currently being obtained, and proofreading will soon be underway. I am thankful to the publishers for their willingness to handle this project in its new, larger format. I am also grateful to the committee of Reformed Faith and Life-Canada for having set aside enough funds to allow this publication to see the light of day once all the steps have been satisfactorily dealt with. Please pray that this project will not be delayed, as it took a long time to come into being. To soothe my conscience, I like to compare it with the incubation period of an octopus of the Northern Pacific ocean, the graneledone boreo-pacifica, which lasts up to 53 months for an average of 160 eggs. Since the book will contain over 300 pages, I think I have been doing pretty well after all (note, though, that the female octopus dies immediately after the eggs have hatched…).
